## 1. Bitwarden

Best for: People who want a capable free plan and open-source apps. Bitwarden suits people who want a free plan with no device limit, and anyone who values open-source code and published audits. Premium is cheap at $19.80 a year and adds emergency access and two-factor code generation. The catch: the free plan shares with only one other person, and Bitwarden calls its bug bounty private.

## 2. Proton Pass

Best for: Privacy-minded people who want a strong free plan and email aliases. Proton Pass suits people who want a free plan without device limits and value open-source apps and recent audits. Pass Plus adds a built-in authenticator, emergency access and unlimited aliases for $2.99 a month billed yearly. The catch: two-factor codes are not in the free plan, and emergency access needs a paid plan and a Proton Mail address for both people.

## 3. RoboForm

Best for: People who want a cheap paid plan with passkeys. RoboForm suits people who want a low-cost paid plan with passkeys, a built-in authenticator, sharing and emergency access. Its 2024 penetration test by Secfault Security is published as a summary. The catch is the free plan, which works on a single device, and Linux gets browser extensions only.

## 4. Keeper Password Manager

Best for: People who want certified security and a family plan. Keeper suits people who want a paid manager with strong certifications and apps on every major system. It saves passkeys, fills two-factor codes and offers emergency access and a five-person family plan. The catch is the free plan, limited to one phone and 10 records, and no dated audit report is published.

## 5. LastPass

Best for: Families who want a low-cost six-person plan. LastPass suits families who want a six-person plan at a low price, with passkeys and emergency access. It names ISO 27001 and SOC 2 Type II certifications. The catch is its 2022 breach, in which a copy of customer vaults was stolen with website addresses unencrypted, and a free plan limited to one device type.

## 6. 1Password

Best for: People and families who want polished apps on every system and do not need a free plan. 1Password suits people who want one paid app that works the same on Windows, Mac, Linux and phones, with passkeys, two-factor codes and sharing built in. Every vault is end-to-end encrypted and protected by a Secret Key as well as your password. The catch is cost: there is no free plan, the regular price is $3.99 a month, and the only public audit reports on its audits page date from 2020.

## 7. NordPass

Best for: People who want a low first-year price and a family plan for six. NordPass suits people who want apps on every major system and a cheap first year, with emergency access and sharing in Premium. Data is encrypted on your device with XChaCha20 before it is uploaded. The catch: the free plan works on only one device at a time, introductory prices end after the first term, and no recent audit report is public.

## 8. Dashlane

Best for: People who live in the browser and want a VPN bundled with their password manager. Dashlane suits people who mostly work in a browser and want unlimited devices, sharing and a VPN in one subscription. The vault is encrypted and decrypted only on your devices. The catch: it is now paid-only at $64.99 a year, it has no Windows app, and its emergency contact feature was retired.

## 9. Enpass

Best for: People who want the vault in their own cloud. Enpass suits people who want their encrypted vault kept in their own cloud storage rather than on a vendor's servers. It has apps for all five systems, saves passkeys, fills TOTP codes and sells a one-time licence. The catch is a free plan capped at 25 items and no published product audit or penetration test.

## 10. KeePassXC

Best for: Desktop users who want a free, offline vault. KeePassXC suits desktop users who want a free, open-source manager with the vault in a file they control. It stores passkeys and TOTP codes and holds a 2025 security certification from ANSSI with a published report. The catch is that there is no official phone app, no sync service and no web vault, so phones need third-party KeePass apps.
