# GParted

Free, open-source partition editor that runs from a bootable USB or CD image on a Windows PC.

48 points out of 100. #11 of 12 disk partition managers. Vendor: GParted project. Website: https://gparted.org/

- GParted is free and its source is public under GPL-2.0 or later [1][4].
- It runs on Windows PCs by booting GParted Live from a USB stick or CD; the current image is 1.8.1-6 for 64-bit PCs [1][2].
- It can resize and move NTFS, FAT32 and ext4 partitions; exFAT can be created and moved but not resized [3].
- Cancel stops or rolls back operations to protect data; Force Cancel can corrupt a file system [5].
- The default partition table is GPT for disks of 2 TiB and larger [5].

Verdict: GParted suits people comfortable booting a Linux live image who want a free resizer for NTFS, FAT32 and ext4 [1][2][3]. Its code is public and nothing is sold [1][4]. The catch: its pages list no merge, no whole-disk clone, no Windows migration and no MBR-to-GPT conversion, and it is not a Windows app [3][5]. Best for: People who want a free, open-source resizer and can boot from a USB stick.

| Disks and system | Migrate Windows to another drive | Not published | 0/8 | Not published on the vendor's features page or FAQ [3][7]. |
| Disks and system | Clone a whole disk | Not published | 0/7 | Not published; the features and manual describe copying single partitions, not whole disks [3][5]. |

| Safety and media | Bootable disc or USB | Yes | 7/7 | GParted Live is an ISO for CD, USB, HD or PXE that runs GParted on Windows PCs by booting [1][2]. |
| Safety and media | Protection if an operation is interrupted | Yes | 5/5 | Cancel stops or rolls back operations as necessary to ensure data integrity. Power failure itself is not covered [5]. |

## Strengths

- Free to use, with no paid edition [1].
- Source code is public on GNOME's GitLab under GPL-2.0 or later [4].
- Moves, copies and resizes NTFS, FAT32 and ext4 partitions [3].
- A bootable live image starts the tool on a PC, including one running Windows [1][2].
- Cancel asks the tool to stop or roll back operations to keep data intact [5].

## Limits

- It runs only from live media on Windows PCs; there is no Windows app [1][2].
- exFAT partitions cannot be grown or shrunk [3].
- Moving free space to a non-adjacent partition takes several steps, not one operation [6].
- The manual warns that data can be lost to software bugs, hardware problems or power failure [5].
- Merge, split, whole-disk cloning and MBR/GPT conversion are not listed on its pages [3][5].
